How We Work

Your voice comes first.

Good writing starts with understanding the person behind it.

Before we write, we take the time to understand how you think, how you communicate and what you want the writing to achieve. That might mean discussing an idea over a call, working from your notes or reviewing things you've written or said before.

You don't need to arrive with a polished brief. That's part of what we're here for.

Our job is to make the process straightforward, turn what you know into something worth reading and make sure the finished writing still feels like yours.

Listen

It starts with a conversation.

Every engagement begins by getting to know you, your business and what you want to communicate.

For ghostwriting and thought leadership, that means learning how you naturally speak and write, the subjects you know well, the opinions you hold and the audience you want to reach.

For website and long-form projects, the focus may be more on your business, customers, subject matter and what the content needs to accomplish.

Depending on the project, this can involve an initial call, existing materials, voice notes, previous writing or simply a collection of rough ideas.

There is no expectation that everything will be perfectly organised before we begin.

Understand

Find what is worth saying.

Writing isn't just about making sentences sound better.

Before anything is drafted, we need to understand the idea behind it.

Sometimes that means asking questions, challenging an assumption or finding the interesting point hidden inside a much broader conversation. Other times, it means taking a complicated subject and identifying the clearest way to explain it.

For ongoing thought leadership, this stage also helps identify recurring themes and perspectives that can form the basis of future content.

The objective is simple: make sure there is something worth saying before worrying about how to say it.

Write

Turn the thinking into words.

Once the direction is clear, Greyline takes care of the writing.

Your conversations, notes, research and ideas are developed into content appropriate for the audience and platform, whether that's a LinkedIn post, an opinion piece, a website page or an in-depth report.

For ghostwritten content, particular attention is paid to your natural language and communication style. The aim isn't to create a polished version of somebody else.

It should still sound like you. Just with the time to think about every word.

Refine

Get it right, not just finished.

The first draft is a starting point, not something you're expected to simply approve.

You review the writing and tell us what feels right, what doesn't and anything you want to change.

That feedback is particularly valuable in a ghostwriting relationship. Every comment helps us understand your preferences more clearly, from the expressions you naturally use to the arguments you would make differently.

Over time, less explanation is needed because we already understand how you think and how you want to sound.

The relationship gets easier. The writing gets closer.

What Do We Need From You?

Less than you might think.

You don't need to spend hours writing detailed briefs before handing something over.

For ongoing ghostwriting and thought leadership, a regular conversation can often provide enough material for several pieces of content.

The expertise and perspective come from you. Greyline handles the process of turning them into words.

Depending on the engagement, we can work from:

  • Conversations and interviews
  • Voice notes
  • Rough notes and bullet points
  • Previous articles or posts
  • Presentations and internal documents
  • Research and source material
  • Existing website content
  • An idea that isn't fully formed yet

Will It Actually Sound Like Me?

It should.

Good ghostwriting shouldn't leave someone wondering who wrote it.

We pay attention to the details that make your communication recognisable: vocabulary, sentence structure, tone, humour, level of formality and even the words you tend to avoid.

We also learn through feedback. The longer we work together, the more developed that understanding becomes.

That doesn't mean reproducing every hesitation or verbal habit exactly as you speak. Writing and conversation are different.

The aim is to capture your voice at its clearest.

How Much Time Will I Need to Commit?

The process is designed to make writing easier, not create another item on your to-do list.

The amount of involvement required depends on the project.

A defined website or long-form project may require more input at the beginning while we establish the subject matter and objectives. An ongoing ghostwriting relationship can become considerably lighter once we understand your voice and areas of expertise.

For many ongoing engagements, the most valuable input is simply a regular conversation about what you're seeing, thinking and working on.

Greyline takes it from there.

Working Together

One project or an ongoing relationship.

Some writing has a clear beginning and end.

A website needs rewriting. An article needs producing. A report needs turning into something people will actually want to read.

These projects can be handled individually with an agreed scope, fee and timeline.

Ghostwriting and thought leadership work differently.

They tend to become more effective over time as Greyline develops a deeper understanding of your voice, expertise and perspective. For that reason, these services are generally offered as ongoing monthly engagements.

Whichever way we work together, you'll know what we're doing, what it costs and what we need from you before the work begins.

No unnecessary process. No mystery around what happens next.

Ready when you are.

You don't need a finished brief.

Bring an idea, a problem, a half-written draft or simply something you think is worth talking about.

We'll find the words from there.
